Research

Big things happen in CAST

Our research makes an impact on everyday lives. It’s practical. It’s meaningful. It’s making the world a better place.

What We're Working On

A rural rock road.

Overdoses in Illinois have risen dramatically. What can we do to help?

Joshua Stout

Since 1999, there have been 1.2 million overdose deaths in the United States. Closer to home in Illinois, methamphetamine combined with heroin or fentanyl have contributed to an increase in overdoses, especially in rural areas.

Dr. Joshua Stout is taking a look at how these lethal combinations are being used and how we can address addiction treatment and prevention services for affected communities. Read Dr. Stout's study abstract

What We’ve Done

A pregnant mother lifts a weight next to a yoga ball.

A strong mom is key to a healthy baby.

Samantha McDonald

In January 2025, Dr. Samantha McDonald and a team of others launched Strong Moms and Healthy Babies, a program that offers free exercise sessions for women who are trying to become pregnant, currently pregnant, or recently postpartum.

This program offers insight into how pregnancy affects muscle size, quality, and fatigue. It also explores how these changes might affect the baby's muscle development.

This is one of the first studies to examine muscle health during pregnancy and will hopefully lead to new insights around exercise, maternal health, and health disparities.

Data is the superhero of agricultural challenges.

Nicholas Heller

Dr. Nicholas Heller received a grant to launch a new program called ELIAS-DS (Experiential Learning in Applied Statistics and Data Science).

This program gives students hands-on experience to apply data science to crop science. Combining these skills will help our students participate in fully funded research projects that are tackling some of agricultures biggest challenges.
